“In my happy place” when ever I make textile art I feel safe and relaxed. I find that when I am sat at a machine, or with a needle in my hand I can loose myself in the work.

I like to go with the flow, so don’t have a plan on what I am doing. No sketch or composition to start with, it’s more planned as I do. Its just like the old saying “Learning through play’

Techniques I have used making these products over the last year:

Bonded fabrics
Free machine embroidery
Thermo heated/distressed fabrics
Fabric manipulation
Hand embroidery/embellishments
Hand wrapping threaded
Thread/sequin entrapment (within PVC)
Stuffed appliqué

I used a glue gun to assemble.

The marine life and natural worlds hoop are:

Free machine embroidery, bonded fabric, painted foam/mixed materials and heat manipulated fabrics.

The framed textile art are created using quilting cotton, which I’ve distressed slightly after stitching.

For the scrap pictures, the only techniques are machine stitching and rubbing (distressing the edges- I did this with using my fingers/needle and a brush)

The scrappy pictures (in frames) this was a well-being task to be honest. I don’t like waste, so looked at how small scraps of material could be used within a product. As I began pieces these together, it was so relaxing and distressing. I ended up making a few. So good for the environment and good for my mental health.

And of course some of the masks that I’ve created. I used the Olson mask and hair bobbles rather than elastic.

The masks, I was asked to create by a colleague. I had made several for me to wear with my outfits. She always said I looked stylish and coordinated. Of course I couldn’t say know, so asked what theme she wanted and Harry Potter won.

The two elephant samples were for a project I was designing for my year 8 students at school. It’s always nice to have a play with materials and allows the students to see what they could manufacture.
