Mary Lane

When lockdown began and I couldn’t go into my studio, ( I have studio space at The Loft Space Brittania Mills, Slaithwaite) I decided to make stitched circles. I love using circles in my design work and I was keen to play with lots of colour combos from the stash of thread that I have.

I wanted to use only what I had in the house and not buy anything. I used an embroidery hoop, embroidery thread, calico fabric for the base that I found from a project I did many years ago and some additional calico fabric from cut up shopping bags.

I used the same single stitch throughout, not sure of the correct name- running stitch then you go back and connect the stitches by looping through them.

I felt calm and relaxed and grounded. I have really enjoyed making this series. I was using one simple technique so wasn’t hampered by technical considerations. Making circles connected to the sense that we’ve been going round in circles for a year, it seemed fitting but wasn’t the original intention.

When I had made about 30 circles I started to think about how I would present them because several people had expressed an interest in buying. I settled on two different size frames. A few circles placed together look good as well as singly. I have sold about 20 circles.
